Turmoil series Part 2

I let you stab me because I saw that you’re bleeding, too.
With knives on your back planted by people you once loved.
You’re hurting, So I must hurt too. And with the thousand cuts, I realized….
You’ve become them…..And I have become you.
The floor creaks as I walk past the crooked bed I spent the night on. The air is heavy, almost too musty to breathe. The walls are tainted with dried blood and palm marks. I go to the bathroom to wash my face, and my crooked reflection on the broken mirror represents how shattered I feel inside.
It’s been a week since I saw the lifeless body of my brother, my little Mikael. That night, Sonia had to die, and Maia had to wake up again. I always knew that a simple Life could never be mine. The world is not like your mother’s womb. It won’t stretch to make space for you or give you warmth. It will, in fact, box you up, break you down, and rot you from within. That’s Life; at least, that’s my Life.
Continuing in her inner turmoil, Maia thinks about why the Oyabun would betray her this way. None of the scenarios justified this betrayal in her eyes. Calling him by his true name could make bile rise in her mouth from the pits of her empty stomach. Old memories of them training together resurface in her mind. His eyes shone with pride when she aced every task and beat every title holder. She remembers the night he opened the door for her to enter the great red hall where only a few of his trusted men were allowed. She learned so much about him, who he is behind his title and the power he so effortlessly embodies. After all, he was her first real crush.
A gunshot through the window hits the TV, making tiny shards of glass piercing Maia’s cheeks. Her thoughts about him vanish instantly with the sudden attack. She quickly reaches for her gun and checks if it’s loaded before using the broken TV stand as cover to eye out who the attackers could be.
She sees two figures scurrying away towards the ally and starts following them. Pushing and bumping into people, her eyes focused on the two men who kept turning back at her, their eyes widening in shock at how fast she had caught up to speed with them. “That’s right fuckers. I am going to make you regret that stunt of yours,” Maia thinks to herself, grinning and wiping away the blood drops that are rushing down her wounded cheeks.
A jeep drives by with horns blaring, and she already knows it’s the damn getaway car for her attacker. She needs to catch up and do it NOW. She punches a biker who’s just getting off, taking his helmet off his hand as she punches at the corner end of his spine; she cuts off the back of his ankles when he trips over to abstain him from walking or following her. She quickly gets on the bike and rides straight off continuing the chase. Was it a bit extreme to do that to a random man? She thinks to herself. “Ah fuck it, he is a man, had it coming,” she shouts loud as she reaches an adrenaline high, catching up to one of the attackers.
They had already got in the jeep a few moments back while she got rid of the biker man, but she noticed one of them had their hand swinging out the window. She reaches to grab the hand, and right then, she feels a pang on her shoulder, which makes her lose her balance and crash out, but not before she had already gotten a death grip on that hand pulling his body along. It takes a minute to get back to consciousness, but Maia’s sight is blurry. She reaches the body to knock down some answers from him. She turns his body to face her, and her fist that was ready to punch the shit out of him limps down in despair. The man is dead. But not just dead; his eyes have been removed, just like Mikael.
She looks around, confused as to how the fuck was that even possible in the time frame given the chase, and was it Oyabun who was in the car since this is his signature. She looks around to see the jeep turning the corner, but just before it can go out of sight, she focuses intensely to note that it isn’t him in the car; no, it is someone much worse.
Many years ago, before Oyabun reigned the title, it was ruled and monitored by a man who would even make the devil look human. Oyabun was his right-hand man back then. His name was Ivor. One day he was declared murdered, and the rest was history. He did have a son who no one knew the whereabouts of. It is said Ivor kept him hidden so as to continue his rule, but he was never found, and a prophecy was rumored that he would come back one day to avenge his father.
The man Maia saw in the jeep was a spitting image of Ivor. But how could that be? Could it be Ivor’s son who is back to complete the prophecy? But why is he killing people the way Oyabun does. Is he trying to frame him for something? Did he kill Mikael as well? Many such questions puzzled Maia as she got up from the crash scene, walking away from the crowd of people eyeing the dead man with no eyes. She limps away to a nearby building that looks pretty abandoned—not worrying about any consequences of being caught as no police steps foot into this area of town. It reeks of criminals.
She reaches for support and slumps down a wall. Resting her head with a thud, she stares up at the sky, trying to make sense of it all. Does Oyabun know that Ivor’s son is back and killing people his way to conspire against him? Where the fuck even is he, Maia grunts in frustration. All she needs is a whisky bottle or a dick down her throat to distract her from all this pain. Just then, her phone vibrates in her pocket.
She takes the phone out and sees it’s an unknown call through the cracked, barely working screen. “Hardly survived the chase, ha little buddy,” she says to her phone before answering it.
“Hey beautiful, have you been my good little wild cat? Ripping heads off with your bare teeth.” his voice sent chills down Maia’s spine. It was him. “Oyabun?” her voice shaky. “ha ha haaaa.. call me by my name. It’s been a while,” his laughter almost sounds menacing- He is angry- she gulps her nervousness and responds. “Nikolai, is that you?”
“Yes kitten, and I know how things look like, and probably that son of a bitch has convinced you and everyone else I’m off killing their family, but that’s not true” Maia takes a sigh of relief almost comforting herself on the thought that he didn’t betray her, but new questions arise regarding who the real culprit is behind all this. “Tsk tsk, relax that frown on your face. I might have answers to ease your turmoil.” She snaps her head in all possible directions to check if he is around looking at her, and just as she thought, peeking from a broken window of the abandoned building in front of her. There he was, in all his glory, smirking with venom dripping down his aura.
She wasn’t sure if she could trust him, but after seeing Ivor’s possible son out on a rampage, she knew she had to go speak to Nikolai. Get closure on what the fuck is happening. She walks up to him never losing eye contact……..
Nikolai and Maia will walk the same path now, it seems, one for avenging his name, the other for her dead brother. The spiraling path leading straight to vengeance.
